How to check your remaining behaviour support funding

Your NDIS plan shows what was allocated when it started, not what is left today. Before we prepare a service agreement, we need a screenshot of the current balance, because:

  • other providers may already have claimed against the same funding, or still have invoices to come;
  • we need to see whether your funding is divided into blocks, such as quarters, that we need to be aware of in our work with you; and
  • it lets us understand the funding that is actually available, so we can plan the work with you around it, and make sure the support we agree on can be paid for.

If you have a support coordinator and aren't sure how to check, please ask them. They can check it for you, or show you where to look.

Step 1. Log in and find the behaviour support budget

If you are the participant, a nominee or family

  • Open the my NDIS app on your phone, or log in to myGov on a computer and open my NDIS.
  • If your plan isn't there, it is an older plan. Log in to myGov and open myplace instead.

If you are a support coordinator

  • Log in through PRODA and open the my NDIS provider portal. The participant needs to have given consent for you to see their plan.
  • If the plan isn't there, it is an older plan. Open the myplace provider portal instead.

Then open the budget for the current plan and find behaviour support. It may be called Behaviour Support, Improved Relationships or Relationships.

Step 2. Take the screenshot

Please screenshot what is available, spent and remaining for the current funding period, with today's date showing, and attach it to your referral or send it to admin@richersupport.com.

If your funding is divided into blocks, opening the behaviour support budget will usually show the dates of the current funding period and how much is available in it. Please make sure those dates are in your screenshot too, so we can see how the funding is spread across the year.

Please also send their latest statement, like the second example above, and ask whether any invoices have arrived that aren't paid yet, because these don't always show in the NDIS balance.

Adding us as one of your providers (PACE plans)

If your NDIS plan is in PACE, the NDIS needs to know who your behaviour support provider is before they can be paid. This is sometimes called endorsing a provider, and the NDIS calls it adding a "my provider". You only need to do it once, and it has to be done by you or your plan nominee.

  1. Call the NDIA on 1800 800 110.
  2. Ask them to list Richer Support as your behaviour support provider, for your Behaviour Support budget.
  3. If they ask for our details, these are Richer Support Pty Ltd, NDIS registration number 4050101617, ABN 55 657 230 352.

Some people can also do this themselves in the my NDIS app or portal, under My providers. Your support coordinator can help, and we will send you these details again once your service agreement is signed.

Do I have behaviour support funding? How to find it in your NDIS plan

Open your NDIS plan, or your budget in the my NDIS app or portal, and look in the Capacity Building section, which is the part of your plan for building skills and independence:

  • Behaviour support is Capacity Building funding.
  • Older plans show it under Improved Relationships.
  • Newer PACE plans usually show a separate Behaviour Support budget, and some also show amounts under Relationships, so please check both.
  • Behaviour support funding can only be used for behaviour support. It can't be spent on other therapies, such as occupational therapy or speech pathology.
  • It works the other way too. We can't use funding from other parts of your NDIS plan for behaviour support, such as Core funding, which usually pays for support workers, or Improved Daily Living, which usually pays for therapies like occupational therapy.
  • It can only be used with a provider registered with the NDIS Commission for specialist behaviour support. Richer Support is a psychologist-led, registered NDIS provider, and has been providing behaviour support for four years. You can read how we are checked.

The two types of behaviour support

  • The assessment and the behaviour support plan. The NDIS calls this Specialist Behavioural Intervention Support (11_022_0110_7_3).
  • Training and coaching your family, carers and support workers to use the plan. The NDIS calls this Behaviour Management Plan, including training (11_023_0110_7_3).
  • Some plans give one amount for behaviour support, and some show hours for each item.
  • Both items have the same price limit, set each year in the NDIA's pricing arrangements.

Funding periods

  • Some plans have funding periods, which divide the funding into blocks, usually quarters of three months each.
  • If the behaviour support funding for one quarter runs out, we have to pause and wait until the next quarter begins before we can continue working, even if there is plenty left in your NDIS plan overall.
  • Unspent funding rolls over to the next quarter within the same plan, but not into a new plan.
  • That is why we plan the work across the whole year with you, so that the busiest parts, such as writing the plan and training your team, fit within the funding available each quarter.
  • The NDIA explains this in What is NDIS funding.

How do I get behaviour support in my NDIS plan?

The NDIA adds behaviour support when it hears that you, or the person you support, need a higher level of support. You can raise it:

  • at your NDIS plan meeting or check-in;
  • yourself, or through your family or guardian; or
  • through your support coordinator, a provider or a school.

Evidence that helps:

  • a practitioner's report on the support you need, how much, and why;
  • incident reports; and
  • assessments or plans from other professionals, such as a psychologist or occupational therapist.

If your NDIS plan has some behaviour support, but not enough

  • Sometimes the NDIA funds a small amount of behaviour support, even when much more is needed.
  • When that happens, we use that funding to write a thorough report that shows the NDIA what is actually needed. For example, if your NDIS plan funds 20 hours but the level of complexity needs closer to 120, our report explains why, and it goes to the NDIA with a request for more funding.

If you already have an NDIS plan, but behaviour support isn't in it

  • If your needs have changed since your NDIS plan was made, for example behaviour that is new, more frequent or harder to manage, you can ask the NDIA to reassess your NDIS plan and add behaviour support.
  • The request is made by you, your plan nominee (someone the NDIA has appointed to make decisions for you), or a child's representative.
  • Your support coordinator can help gather the evidence and fill in the form, but since 27 August 2026 they can't make the request themselves.

How the NDIA decides whether to fund behaviour support

The NDIA funds supports that are "reasonable and necessary". For behaviour support, it looks at whether:

  • the support is related to your disability;
  • it is likely to be effective and beneficial, and help you work towards your goals;
  • it is good value for money compared with other options;
  • it is best funded by the NDIS, rather than another system such as health or education; and
  • what support your family, friends and community already give.

That is why a strong report explains the type and amount of support needed, how it relates to your disability, how it will help, and who should provide it and where. If restrictive practices are being used, a behaviour support plan is required by law, which is strong evidence on its own. The NDIA's behaviour support guideline has more detail.

Can I pay privately for a behaviour support practitioner?

  • Yes. You can pay privately if you don't have NDIS funding, are waiting for a decision, or would like more support than your NDIS plan covers.
  • Our private fee is the same as the NDIS price limit for specialist behaviour support, set out in the NDIA's pricing arrangements.
  • We talk through an estimate with you before any work starts.
  • Unfortunately, Medicare doesn't fund behaviour support.

How do I find a behaviour support practitioner?

Not on the NDIS yet? How to apply, if behaviour is part of the picture

If you, or the person you support, aren't an NDIS participant yet, this is how applying usually works:

  1. Check whether you are likely to be eligible. You need to be under 65 when you apply, live in Australia as a citizen or permanent resident, and have a disability that is likely to be permanent and significantly affects everyday life, or need early support.
  2. Contact an NDIS partner in your area, or call the NDIA on 1800 800 110, to start an access request.
  3. Gather evidence from the professionals who know you. The NDIA looks most closely at how your disability affects daily life, such as what you can't do without help, how often, and what happens when support isn't there.
  4. Submit the access request with your evidence. The NDIA aims to decide within 90 days once it has everything.

Where behaviour is a big part of daily life, a behaviour support assessment can be strong evidence, because it describes the behaviour, what drives it, and the support needed in plain terms the NDIA can use. If you are not accepted, you can apply again once you have more evidence. The NDIA's page How to apply has the full details and forms.

Can't afford an assessment? Ask about our Equal Access program

  • Equal Access is Richer Support's own pro bono program.
  • It is for people who need a brief assessment to advocate for the right behaviour support funding, but don't have behaviour support in their NDIS plan yet, including people who are applying to the NDIS.
  • Each year, we offer a small number of these assessments free of charge, so that cost does not stand in the way of getting the right support.
  • You can read more about Equal Access and how to ask for it.

Common questions

Do I need NDIS funding before I contact a behaviour support practitioner?

No. You are welcome to contact us first, and we can talk through whether behaviour support could help, what funding you have, and what to ask for if it is not in your NDIS plan yet.

How many hours does behaviour support take?

It depends on you or the person you support, how many people are involved in their support, and whether restrictive practices are involved. Once we understand the situation, we give you an estimate of the hours before anything is agreed.

Based on NDIA and NDIS Commission information as at 13 October 2026. This is general information, not advice from the NDIA. NDIS rules change, so please check with the NDIA, your support coordinator or us if anything here doesn't match your NDIS plan.

Ready to talk, or ready to refer?

If you would like a chat first, you are very welcome, and there is no need to have your funding sorted. If you are ready to make a referral, our referral form asks for the funding details on this page, including a current screenshot.
